Ce terme, probablement d'origine portugaise ("barra" + "choa"), est dérivé d'expressions comme "barre-à-cheois", "barre-éschué", "barre échouée", "barre-à-choir" ou encore "barre-à-échoir", "là où les navires viennent choir".
