Surface séparant des couches sédimentaires, qui montre l'évidence d'un approfondissement abrupt dans la profondeur d'eau de dépôt. L'approfondissement est souvent accompagnée d'une érosion sous-marine mineure (surface de ravinement), liée à l'action des vagues et d'un faible hiatus. Une surface d'inondation n'est pas fossilisée par des biseaux d'aggradation sauf si, par hasard, elle coïncide avec une limite de séquence (discordance).
