À noter que la définition du «vent maximum moyen de surface» varie suivant les organisations. L'OMM [Organisation météorologique mondiale] préconise un vent moyenné sur 10 min. Beaucoup de pays utilisent ce pas de temps comme un standard. Malgré cela le «National Hurricane Center» (NHC) et le «Joint Typhoon Warning Center» (JTWC) des USA utilisent un pas de temps de 1 min pour définir le vent moyen. Cette différence de pas de temps entraîne des difficultés lorsqu'on veut faire des statistiques sur le nombre de cyclones dans différents bassins, sachant qu'un pas de temps plus petit augmente le nombre de cas.
