Excess contaminated minewater should be directed to an appropriate waste treatment system. This may range from solids settling sumps in the mine workings to chemical or mechanical treatment systems on the surface. Surface minewater storage ponds should be designed to provide adequate containment of peak flows and any accumulated solids.
