La RMO ne porte que sur les méniscectomies (interne ou externe) arthroscopiques isolées, non associées à d'autres gestes chirurgicaux, sans laxité du genou opéré centrale ou latérale, et en l'absence de signe radiologique d'arthrose.

La préservation de capital méniscal influence directement les résultats cliniques et radiologiques dès le moyen terme des ligamentoplasties. La méniscectomie latérale est plus péjorative sur le résultat fonctionnel que la méniscectomie médiale. Mais c'est l'absence de ménisque médial qui retentit le plus sur l'évolution radiologique.
