L'eau de fonte des glaciers contribue à préserver l'habitat d'espèces aquatiques qui sont bien adaptées aux cours d'eau fraîche situés en montagne. L'eau de fonte maintient les niveaux d'eau et les habitats nécessaires à la migration et au frai de la truite à la fin de l'été et à l'automne. Une diminution des quantités d'eau de fonte pendant cette période pourrait déjà avoir eu un impact important sur la population de l'omble à tête plate.
