Tout d'abord, pour pouvoir retenir les informations importantes, le cerveau a besoin d'oublier certaines données qui peuvent apparaître comme accessoires. L'oubli est donc nécessaire au bon fonctionnement du cerveau. Une disparition involontaire de certains souvenirs est aussi fréquente. Ce sont les «trous de mémoire» que nous connaissons tous (oubli ponctuel des clés, du nom d'un voisin…) et qui ont tendance à être plus fréquents avec l'âge.
