The Merchants Bank of Canada was not represented in Waterloo County until it amalgamated with the Commercial Bank of Canada in 1868. At that time it assumed control of the Commercial's two offices in Galt and Berlin. In later years, it also moved into Waterloo (1871) and Ayr (1880).
