Les valeurs de vorticité cyclonique et anticyclonique atteignent leurs maximums en moyenne ou haute troposphère, au niveau de plus forte vitesse verticale où la convergence s'annule. Le poids des précipitations formées à partir des gouttelettes de nuage diminue bientôt l'intensité des mouvements verticaux au centre du courant ascendant, il va alors se séparer en deux parties : celle située sur la droite par rapport au déplacement emporte une circulation cyclonique appelée mésocyclone, celle sur la gauche une circulation anticyclonique, le mésoanticyclone.
