État de la matière intermédiaire entre deux autres.

Certaines molécules organiques allongées présentent des phases intermédiaires entre solide cristallisé et liquide amorphe, par chauffage, ce sont les mésophases. D'une manière imagée mais ambiguë on les appelle communément «cristaux liquides». Ces phases mésomorphes n'ont pas la structure tripériodique des cristaux. L'isotropie statistique des liquides ne les caractérise pas davantage.
