Les ophiolites [...] contiennent souvent des dépôts massifs de sulfures riches en cuivre [...] Les géologues avaient supposé que ces minerais s'étaient formés aux dorsales médio-océaniques, où l'eau de mer aurait lessivé, puis reprécipité les métaux sous forme de sulfures. Des sous-marins de recherche ont montré des sources hydrothermales en activité et confirmé les hypothèses de façon éclatante : le fond océanique est recouvert de dépôts de sulfures métalliques auprès des «fumeurs noirs».
