A typical conventional purification and crystal-growth process for making semiconductor grade silicon is summarized. ... Quartzite pebbles -sand- are mixed with a source of carbon and reduced in a high-temperature electric-arc furnace to produce a relatively impure molten silicon, which is drained off and cooled rapidly in a boat, forming metallurgical polycrystalline silicon (MG-Si).

Le silicium compte parmi les éléments les plus abondants de l'écorce terrestre. Il se présente toujours sous la forme d'un composé (silice ou silicates). [...] Le matériau employé dans la fabrication des photopiles tolère une concentration totale en impuretés électriquement actives de 1014 ou 1015 atomes [...]. Il existe plusieurs méthodes de préparation, la plus répandue est la réduction, à très haute température, de l'oxyde de silicium par le carbone. Le silicium métallurgique ainsi obtenu contient environ 98 % de silicium et d'autres impuretés comme le fer, l'aluminium, le bore, le phosphore.
