La calcification métastatique [est] celle que l'on observe en cas d'hypercalcémie. Le cas habituel est celui d'une lyse osseuse avec libération d'une grande quantité de calcium, celui-ci se déposant dans le tissu conjonctif. La précipitation de calcium se fait électivement aux zones d'élimination des ions acides, au contact des membranes basales dans le rein (néphrocalcinose), dans la muqueuse gastrique et dans les cloisons inter-alvéolaires du poumon. La calcification métastatique s'accompagne souvent de la formation de calculs, en particulier au niveau du rein.
