As a result, in March 1983, the Métis Nation separated from the Native Council of Canada to form the Métis National Council (MNC) - its own Métis-specific national representative body. Since 1983, the MNC has represented the Métis Nation nationally and internationally. It receives its mandate and direction from the democratically elected leadership of the Métis Nation's governments from Ontario westward. Overall, the MNC's central goal is to secure a healthy space for the Métis Nation's on-going existence within the Canadian federation.

Le Ralliement national des Métis (RNM) est le représentant national de la nation métisse du Canada. Il a été fondé en 1983 après que la Loi constitutionnelle de 1982 a reconnu les Métis comme peuple distinct possédant des droits ancestraux. Le RNM représente la voix de la nation métisse durant les négociations constitutionnelles qui se tiennent à l'échelle nationale, et joue le rôle de porte-parole et de négociateur des Métis auprès du gouvernement du Canada et durant des conférences et forums nationaux.
