Total factor productivity captures all improvements in the economy's ability to produce beyond those that can be explained by changes in the basic factors of production, labor, and capital. It is our best measure of technological progress, organizational innovation, and gains in overall efficiency, but it is relatively crude and unsatisfying.

La productivité du travail, quant à elle, peut être renforcée de plusieurs manières : en améliorant la qualité de la main-d'œuvre utilisée dans le processus de production, en augmentant l'utilisation du capital et en améliorant sa qualité ainsi qu'en augmentant l'efficience globale de l'utilisation de l'ensemble de ces facteurs de production, ce que les économistes appellent la productivité multifactorielle (PMF). La PMF reflète de nombreuses formes d'amélioration de l'efficience notamment la rationalisation des pratiques de gestion, la modification des modalités d'organisation et les innovations apportées à la production de biens et services.
