  • Wind Energy
DEF

A small-size household wind turbine with a low power output whose span is similar to an outdoor home antenna.

OBS

Micro turbines [are] those from 0.5 to 1.25 meters (about 2 to 4 ft) in diameter ... Mini wind turbines are slightly larger and span the range between the micro turbines and the bigger household-size machines. They vary in diameter from 1.25 to 2.75 meters (4 to 9 ft) ... Household-size wind turbines ... are the largest of the small wind turbine family. [They range from] 3 meters (10 ft) in diameter [to] 18 [meters] (60 ft) ...

English

Subject field(s)
  • Turbines
DEF

A power generation system that is based on a combination of a small gas turbine and a directly driven high-speed generator.

CONT

Based on the gas turbine engine developed in 1938 in England, a micro-turbine utilizes very high internal combustion pressures to rotate a power output shaft. Rotation and torque of a power output shaft is transferred, in the case of a micro-turbine generator, to an alternating current electrical generator.

OBS

The electricity created by the high-speed generator is converted into useful voltage and frequency by a power converter that is also part of the system. The microturbine uses a combustor that can run on various fuels such as natural gas, diesel, ethanol, and biogas.

CONT
