It was the only person at a gathering that was allowed to use the microphone. Could also stand for Microphone Controller, Mic Checka. "The term, MC, stands for Master of Ceremonies" --- A Tribe Called Quest (Midnight Marauders [1993]).

Le DJ était accompagné d'un MC - maître de cérémonie - qui, aux débuts du hip-hop, était celui qui mettait de l'ambiance lors des «block parties», en animant au micro les soirées [...] Ils [les DJs] libéraient un espace sonore où le MC en profitait pour étoffer ses interventions. Au départ de simple onomatopées, puis rapidement des textes rimés. Le MC n'était que le «lieutenant» du DJ, son faire-valoir. Avec les années, les rôles se sont inversés. Le DJ est passé derrière, jusqu'à disparaître parfois.
