Il peut être utile d'établir une distinction entre le métasomatisme des minéraux et celui des roches. Dans le premier cas, il s'agit d'une redistribution des éléments présents dans une roche sous l'action de fluides qui trouvent leur origine dans la roche même, avec formation de nouveaux minéraux, mais sans changement de la composition chimique moyenne de la roche. Dans le métasomatisme des roches au contraire, les fluides extérieurs s'introduisent dans la roche et en modifient la composition chimique originelle.
