Les règlements concernant les mines et les installations minières («Regulations for Mines et Mining Plants») stipulent qu'il faut être âgé d'au moins 16 ans pour travailler dans une exploitation minière ou dans une mine à ciel ouvert (une exception est prévue pour le front de taille) et de 18 ans pour travailler dans une mine souterraine ou pour exercer le front de taille.
