The modes of interaction with systems are becoming evermore varied and sophisticated. Many of our research projects exploit the visual analysis of the end-user in order to improve human-machine interaction. The investigation of gaze and visual attention, the identification of movements, the tracking of facial muscular movements and the recognition of facial expressions are exploited to better comprehend the user's intention in order to supply it with a more user-friendly system.

When studying the conveyance of information between humans and machines, there is a distinction to be observed among three closely related concepts: "communication," which is the unidirectional transmission of a message; "interaction," which is a type of bidirectional communication, but not necessarily oral; and "dialogue," which is a verbal interaction between two active participants.

Intuitivamente, vemos que los aspectos visuales que empleamos en la comunicación entre las personas, como el reconocimiento de la identidad, la edad, la postura, la dirección de la mirada y nuestros gestos, deberían ser los elementos a emplear en la interacción humano-máquina, ya que éstos constituyen la forma natural con la que nos comunicamos. Es por esto que, aunque también se consideran interfaces por voz y por tacto, las más estudiadas son las que emplean la visión.

Machine-machine interaction is all about speed and correctness. It can go thousands of times faster, but even small discrepancies in data can cause breakage if the design is careless. The good MMI optimizes the communication protocol to send the most amount of information in the least amount of time, and pretty much ignores any other considerations.

Une distinction fondamentale réside dans le fait que les interactions entre machines suivent des protocoles pré-établis et séquentiels alors que les interactions entre humains peuvent se passer de ces règles et programmations. C'est une différence majeure. Mais décrire de façon généralisante l'interaction du point de vue de l'interaction 'machine-machine' amènerait une opinion trop réductrice du potentiel d'interaction entre personnes. Un danger apparaît lorsque de telles descriptions interactives deviennent en outre préscriptives et déterminantes pour l'interaction entre humains. C'est pourquoi le domaine de l'interaction «être humain-machine» est le terrain où le conflit entre les diverses opinions sur l'interaction, apparaît à la surface. Ce conflit traduit le dilemme actuel auquel l'informatique se voit confronté. L'interaction dans l'informatique est-elle uniquement celle entre les artefacts techniques ? Le point de départ est-il l'ensemble de l'interaction entre personnes et de l'interactions entre personnes et artefacts techniques ?
