A significant step toward understanding the origin of life may have been made by a group of MIT [Massachusetts Institute of Technology] researchers. Led by Professor Julius Rebek, Jr. of the Department of Chemistry, they have created an extraordinary self-replicating molecular system that they say might be regarded as a "primitive sign of life."

La réalisation d'objets de taille nanométrique dans les trois directions de l'espace avec des molécules organiques ou organométalliques nécessite leur manipulation «à l'unité» et leur assemblage contrôlé en micromachineries supramoléculaires. Cette ingénierie, qui est la base même de l'activité reproductrice des milieux vivants, s'avère, hélas, encore trop ardue pour l'Homme. En effet, la multiplication des fonctionnalités et la fragilité des systèmes moléculaires rendent très problématique la manipulation de molécules à l'unité.
