[Les Monactinellides sont] les plus fréquents parmi les éponges actuelles, mais aussi celles qui se sont le moins bien conservées dans les sédiments géologiques. Possédant en effet un squelette formé de spicules monaxones, non associés, ou réunis par des fibres de spongine, [...] elles sont presque toujours disparues. Seuls, des spicules isolés ont pu parvenir jusqu'à nous.
