The DC-10 pylon's aft attach bulkhead is designed to break at the top of the monoball housing to allow the engine nacelle and pylon to rotate about the front pylon-to-wing attach point on a wheels-up landing thus preventing rupture of the lower wing skin - an integral part of the wing fuel tanks.

La partie supérieure du cadre-ferme arrière du mât moteur du DC-10 a été conçue pour pouvoir se rompre au-dessus du logement de la rotule, afin que dans le cas d'un atterrissage de détresse train rentré, la nacelle moteur et le mât ne soient solidaires que de l'attache frontale mât/voilure, de façon à éviter un déchirement du revêtement inférieur de l'aile, lequel constitue le fond des réservoirs structuraux de voiture.
