The U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has formally approved moving forward with implementation of a multinational design approval program (MDAP) aimed at improving the effectiveness and efficiency of regulatory design reviews for new reactors. The NRC is currently developing plans for near-term implementation of this program. It is expected that the MDAP can improve both the quality and the timeliness of the design certification review efforts, an outcome that may ultimately benefit nuclear designers and manufacturers, by leveraging international expertise in the regulatory design reviews of new reactors.
