The hypothesis that in the case of the inheritance of quantitative characters there is an absence of clear-cut segregation into readily recognizable classes showing typical Mendelian ratios. The "multiple-factor hypothesis" assumes that quantitative characteristics result from the cumulative action of multiple sets of independently transmitted genes, each of which produces only a small effect.
