The process most widely used to desalt sea-water is known as multistage flash distillation. [In] this process ... the seawater is heated and then introduced into a chamber where the pressure is sufficiently low to cause some of the water to boil instantly -or to flash- into steam. Le procédé de distillation par détentes successives, appelé aussi multiflash ou encore procédé éclair à effets multiples ou polyétagé, consiste à faire passer l'eau de mer à distiller dans une série de chambres, la pression et la température diminuant d'une chambre à l'autre.
