DEF

A muscle that originates from the temporal fossa and fascia. It is inserted onto the apex, margins and medical surface of the coronoid process of the mandible, and supplied by deep temporal branches of the mandibular nerve. It elevates the mandible and closes the mouth, its posterior fibers retract the mandible, and it helps in side-to-side movements of the mandible.

There are four pairs of muscles that move the mandible during mastication: the temporalis, masseter, medial pterygoid and lateral pterygoid.

Large, plat, radié, le muscle temporal occupe la fosse temporale, d'où ses faisceaux convergent vers l'apophyse coronoïde du maxillaire inférieur. [...] Il naît : 1° de toute l'étendue de la fosse temporale, sauf cependant de la gouttière rétro-malaire [...] - 2° de la ligne courbe temporale inférieure et de la crête sphéno-temporale, qui limitent la fosse temporale; - 3° de la moitié ou des deux tiers supérieurs de la face profonde de l'aponévrose temporale. Toutes les insertions du temporal se font par implantation directe des fibres charnues, sauf sur la crête sphéno-temporale [...]

Le temporal, plat et radié, emplit la fosse pariéto-temporale d'où ses fibres charnues et tendineuses convergent vers l'apophyse coronoïde de la mandibule. Ce muscle ne naît pas exactement de toute la fosse pariétotemporale. [...] Le temporal naît par implantation directe des fibres charnues.
