Hypothyroidism leads to a slowing of metabolic processes and in its most severe form to the accumulation of mucopolysaccharides in the skin, causing a nonpitting edema termed myxedema.

OBS

The term myxedema is reserved by some for a severe form of hypothyroidism, whereas others use the terms interchangeably.

Hypothyroïdie. [...] une infiltration diffuse, correspondant au myxœdème. Le visage est bouffi, inexpressif avec un œdème péri-orbitaire : c'est le visage «en pleine lune». Les doigts sont boudinés, les jambes et les chevilles sont gonflées sans prendre le godet. La peau est sèche et rugueuse.
