The species of true cobras live in Africa, five of them belonging to the genus Naja. They are among Africa's familiar and most feared venomous snakes .... Cobras inhabit Africa from the arid parts of the north and east - the Egyptian cobra (Naja haje) - through the hot, humid western and central African jungles - the spitting cobra (Naja nigricollis) and the black-lipped cobra, Naja melanoleuca - to the rocky fields and mountains of South Africa - the cape cobra (Naja nivea).
