National Child Day marks the day of the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. By ratifying this Convention in 1991, Canada made a commitment to ensure that all children are treated with dignity and respect. This commitment includes that they be given the opportunity to have a voice, be protected from harm and be provided with their basic needs and every opportunity to reach their full potential.

La Journée nationale de l'enfant marque l'adoption de la Convention des Nations Unies relative aux droits de l'enfant. En ratifiant cette Convention en 1991, le gouvernement du Canada s'est engagé à assurer que tous les enfants soient traités avec dignité et respect. Il s'est aussi engagé à ce que les enfants puissent se faire entendre, qu'ils soient protégés contre les préjugés, que leurs besoins fondamentaux soient comblés et qu'ils aient toutes les chances de réaliser leur plein potentiel.
