The purpose of the NFI is to assess and monitor the extent, state and sustainable development of Canada's forests in a timely and accurate manner. L'objectif de l'IFN est de permettre l'évaluation et la surveillance rapide et exacte de la superficie, de l'état et de l'aménagement durable des forêts du Canada.
