Les aires naturelles sont aussi des repères, et c'est peut-être là leur plus grande importance: repères vis-à-vis d'un environnement changeant, et permettant d'évaluer, par comparaison, l'importance et les dangers d'un changement. En somme, elles doivent constituer un réseau d'indicateurs biologiques de toute première valeur; les aires naturelles constitueraient ainsi des inventaires de l'environnement et des contrôles permettant de le surveiller et d'alerter les populations humaines si des changements délétères de l'environnement survenaient. Les aires naturelles seraient en quelque sorte des baromètres de l'environnement.
