La filière UNGG (Uranium naturel - Graphite - Gaz carbonique). Historiquement cette filière a été conçue simultanément en France et en Angleterre pour faire du plutonium militaire à partir d'uranium naturel. Le graphite était le modérateur le plus industriel disponible à l'époque. On a, en outre, cherché à récupérer l'énergie thermique: le refroidissement par gaz permettait de monter facilement à moyenne température et de résoudre le problème.
