The near-field microscope is an advanced optical microscope that is able to resolve details slightly smaller than the wavelength of visible light. This high resolution is achieved by passing a light beam through a tiny hole at a distance from the specimen of only about half the diameter of the hole. Un microscope à sonde locale ne possède pas de lentille; la pièce la plus importante de ces microscopes est une sonde, très fine, qui est déplacée au voisinage de l'objet, en champ proche, pour l'éclairer ou encapter un signal. Ces microscopes sont des microscopes à balayage; l'image est obtenue en déplaçant point par point la sonde et en traçant le signal détecté en fonction de sa position.
