NEGATIVE ACCELERATION [2 records]

Record 1 2007-11-27

English

Subject field(s)
  • Energy (Physics)
DEF

Acceleration in a direction opposite to the velocity, or in the direction of the negative axis of a coordinate system.

OBS

A negative acceleration does not always mean the object is slowing down. If an object were moving in the negative direction, the acceleration would be negative as the object gained speed and positive when the object lost speed. An example of this is the acceleration due to gravity. An object in free fall has a negative acceleration even though it is increasing speed. It is negative because the object is moving in a negative direction.

Record 2 2007-10-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Maneuvers
CONT

Negative acceleration means that the object's velocity is decreasing. If the object's velocity is negative, a negative acceleration means that the velocity is becoming more negative, which means that the speed is increasing.

CONT

Remember the plane is undergoing a constant deceleration (or a negative acceleration) and coming to a stop over 25m.

OBS

Negative acceleration is sometimes referred to as deceleration.

CONT
