L'axone, prolongement unique qui possède des branches collatérales et se termine par une arborisation de fibres dont chacune des branches aboutit à la plaque motrice d'une fibre musculaire, dans le cas d'un axone moteur. L'ensemble du corps cellulaire, de l'axone et des fibres musculaires qui en dépendent, constitue l'unité motrice. Recouvert de ses gaines, l'axone prend le nom de cylindraxe ou fibre nerveuse.
