Nitassinan is the ancestral homeland of the Innu people. It covers much of the sub-arctic forest and interior barren lands of the Quebec-Labrador peninsula. The idea of Nitassinan is closely linked to Innu identity. S'il n'a pas administrativement parlant le statut officiel de territoire, le Nitassinan a été défini à des fins administratives. Le Nitassinan fait en effet l'objet de négociations territoriales impliquant les communautés innues ainsi que les gouvernements du Québec et du Canada. Aux termes de l'«Entente de principe d'ordre général entre les Premières nations de Mamuitun et de Nutashkuan, le gouvernement du Québec et le gouvernement du Canada», les limites du Nitassinan correspondent schématiquement au Saguenay Lac-Saint-Jean, c'est-à-dire aux municipalités régionales de comté (MRC) de la Haute-Côte-Nord et de Manicouagan, de la partie sud de la MRC de Caniapiscau et à la partie est de la MRC de Minganie. Ratifié en mars 2004, ce document définit le Nitassinan comme un territoire de pleine juridiction québécoise sur lequel les Innus disposent de certains droits. 2, record 1, French, - Nitassinan
