Les codes nodaux ont été développés pour traiter les cœurs de types REP [réacteur à eau pressurisée], REB [réacteur à eau bouillante] ou RNR [réacteur à neutrons rapides]. Dans tous ces domaines ils ont permis d’atteindre des précisions jusque-là jamais obtenues dans un contexte industriel et cela pour des gestions du combustible de plus en plus performantes et variées (gadolinium, MOX [oxyde mixte] zoné, etc.). Ils permettent aussi de traiter les géométries à pas carré ou hexagonal.
