La méthode SPHINCS consiste en une irradiation photonique composée de plusieurs impulsions de photons de même largeur temporelle, espacées de périodes «blanches» pendant lesquelles aucun photon n’est émis. Les photons interrogateurs induisent des réactions de photofission sur les actinides présents. La signature de ces réactions est le signal retardé de photofission. La seconde étape consiste à mesurer en interpulses (pendant la période «blanche») la signature due aux neutrons retardés de photofission.
