Le gène suppresseur de tumeur, p53 est considéré comme une molécule absolument essentielle à la régulation des réactions cellulaires à divers agents agresseurs de l'ADN [acide désoxyribonucléique]. Très peu de temps après l'apparition des cancers non mélaniques, p53 est muté ou perdu, ce qui donne à croire que ce gène est essentiel à la protection des kératinocytes normaux contre les effets destructeurs du rayonnement ultraviolet (UV).
