La circulation de la boue ou du fluide la remplaçant peut se faire de plusieurs manières : «Circulation directe». Normalement, une pompe injecte la boue par l'intermédiaire du touret dans les tiges actionnant l'outil. Au droit de celui-ci, la boue change son sens de circulation et remonte dans l'espace annulaire formé par les tiges et les parois du forage, en entraînant les débris de la perforation. Puis, à la surface du sol, elle est amenée par une rigole dans les bassins de décantation où elle est de nouveau aspirée par les pompes.
