Le lagunage est réalisé la plupart du temps dans un chenal d'oxydation dit «chenal normal» ou «chenal semi-activé» suivant la charge introduite par m³ de bassin [...] On choisira de préférence un chenal normal à faible charge [...] car celui-ci offre un volume de bassin important et permet ainsi de tamponner les variations de charges et de pH de l'effluent sans stockage préalable (AFEE, Le lagunage, 1976, p. 118).
