Il arrive qu'un déposant ne connaisse pas d'avance la période pendant laquelle il pourra disposer de ses capitaux; le banquier peut se contenter de lui demander de l'informer à l'avance de leur retrait, auquel cas l'on a un «dépôt à préavis» ou un «compte à préavis». Ce préavis peut être par exemple de huit ou de quinze jours : le déposant doit alors aviser huit ou quinze jours à l'avance le banquier de son intention de retirer des fonds.
