Ce type de réseau s'appelle détecteur de nouveauté pour les raisons suivantes : - Si le vecteur d'entrée que l'on applique au réseau a déjà été appris, alors la réponse est le vecteur nul, le filtre est dit "opaque" pour les vecteurs appris; - Si un nouveau vecteur est fourni au réseau, avant que celui-ci ne s'adapte à cette nouvelle entrée, la première sortie qu'il va fournir représentera ce qui est nouveau pour le réseau en regard des signaux qu'il connaît déjà.
