Decided at the Summit held in Lusaka, July 2001. The AU [African Union] came into force July 9, 2002. The AU is the principal organization for the promotion of socioeconomic integration across the African continent. It includes 53 African countries as member states.

The Organization of African Unity was established on May 25, 1963, at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and the Charter of the Organization was signed on that occasion by Heads of State and Government of 32 independent African States.

La UA se creó el 26 de mayo de 2001 en Adís Abeba y comenzó a funcionar el 9 de julio de 2002 en Durban (Sudáfrica),​ reemplazando a la Organización para la Unidad Africana (OUA).

Organización de la Unidad Africana: Sede en Addis Abeba (Etiopía), creada el 25 de mayo de 1963 por los representantes de 32 gobiernos africanos, con exclusión de la República de Sudáfrica. Promueve la unidad y desarrollo africanos; coopera internacionalmente, busca extinguir el colonialismo en Africa y defender la soberanía de los países miembros.
