Notre compréhension de la variabilité de l'océan reste cependant limitée par le manque d'observations historiques. Toutefois, une grande partie de la variabilité océanique est forcée par l'atmosphère : les vents génèrent des courants, l'évaporation et la pluie modifient la salinité de l'eau de mer, et les flux de chaleur air-mer agissent sur la température.
