La classification de Hutchinson et Löffler reconnaît les six types de lacs suivants : 1) amictique : toujours couvert de glace; 2) monomictique froid : couvert de glace la plupart de l’année, mais se réchauffant suffisamment pour fondre, sans toutefois dépasser 4 °C; 3) dimictique : couvert de glace une partie de l’année, stratifié de manière stable une autre partie de l’année et connaissant un brassage au printemps et un autre en automne; 4) monomictique chaud : n’est jamais couvert de glace, est brassé une seule fois par an et est stratifié de manière stable le restant de l’année; 5) oligomictique : n’est jamais couvert de glace, est stratifié la plupart du temps, mais se rafraîchit suffisamment pour être brassé irrégulièrement, à des intervalles de temps supérieurs à un an; 6) polymictique : n’est jamais couvert de glace, est stratifié, mais connaît plusieurs brassages complets chaque année. 3, record 1, French, - lac%20oligomictique
