On appelle chenilles oligophages les chenilles qui vivent sur des plantes appartenant à une même famille végétale (sur les Composées par exemple). Il arrive parfois qu'un groupe systématique en entier soit inféodé à un groupe végétal bien déterminé : les Héliconies, Papillons de jour néotropicaux, ne vivent que sur des Passifloracées.
