Politique vers l'Est mise de l'avant par le chancelier allemand Willy Brandt de 1970 à 1972. Le gouvernement de Bonn signa alors un traité reconnaissant la validité de la frontière germano-polonaise. Il ratifia également le Traité fondamental avec la République démocratique allemande dans lequel l'Allemagne de l'Ouest reconnaîssait pour la première fois l'existence d'un autre État sur le territoire allemand. Cependant, les autorités de Bonn continuaient de considérer qu'il n'y avait qu'une seule nation allemande et que l'Allemagne fédérale incarnait à elle seule la continuité avec le passé.
