The P24 antigen test is, like the PCR test and a culture for HIV, a test that detects the presence of HIV in the blood. P24 is one of the several proteins (the protein with a molecular weight of 24,000) that make up HIV.

Ottawa, le 14 mars 1996, la Croix-Rouge met en place la nouvelle épreuve de dépistage de l'antigène p24 du VIH-1 pour les dons de sang puisqu'elle augmentera la sûreté des produits. Cette mesure est en conformité avec la directive de Santé Canada d'aller de l'avant avec cette épreuve de dépistage et fait suite à l'obtention, le 14 mars 1996, d'une licence de la Food and Drug Administration (FDA) des États-Unis pour cette épreuve.
